  Dry, cracked or sore lips, mainly in cold, windy, dry weather and less often in warm weather. The lips are more sensual to chapping than the skin. Alike the skin, the lips do not produce oils to protect them against drying. Most people get chapped lips from time to time. Dry, cracked or sore lips can interlope with many daily activities, such as smiling, kissing, eating and talking.

  Chapped lips are caused by heavy exposure to wind, sun or dry conditions in any season, but winter is specially troublesome. Chapped lips can have several reasons, including dry weather, overexposure to the sun, lip biting and sucking, riboflavin (vitamin B-2) insufficiencies and ill-fitting dentures. Chapped lips, differentiated by dry, rough, cracked, or reddened lips, are caused by a lack of moisture in the skin.

Rarely, chronic chapped lips can show an underlying problem, such as dermatitis. OTC sunscreens may also be of value as they block the sun's ultraviolet rays from damaging the skin.
